Interns and Graduates

The Current Class

The Upper Valley Educators Institute contributes to the improvement of education by helping mature, remarkably talented people enter the teaching profession. UVEI's class of 2010 carries on this tradition of excellence.  In addition to their solid academic preparation, the majority of the interns had experience in other careers before deciding to become teachers.

The Class of 2010 is composed of 42 interns, equally divided between women and men.  Eighteen will intern in secondary schools, 18 in elementary, 3 in middle schools, and 3 in art education.

The class includes an attorney preparing to become a social studies teacher, a former Corporal in the U.S. Marine Corps who will also become a social studies teacher, a future physics teacher who was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs, a gourmet chef, a puppeteer for children's workshops, two carpenters, three graphic designers, a guitar builder, a dairy farmer, a manufacturing engineer, and a former Assistant County Attorney and Public Defender.  Many interns already have experience working in schools as substitute teachers, special education assistants, and paraprofessionals.

They range in age from 23 to 57; the average age is 34.  Eleven interns hold advanced degrees including 1 with an MSW, 2 with an M.B.A., and 5 with an M.A in a variety of areas.  Three have earned a J.D.

Graduates

More than 700 men and women have graduated from the program, and at least 200 are still serving in schools in Vermont and and New Hampshire. Others are teaching in different parts of the country.

Sixty-three percent of those who graduated in the last few years are teaching full-time. Others serve as permanent substitutes, while some graduates work in school libraries or in guidance.
