Interns and Graduates

The Current Class

The Upper Valley Educators Institute contributes to the improvement of education by helping mature, remarkably talented people enter the teaching profession. UVEI's class of 2011 carries on this tradition of excellence.  In addition to their solid academic preparation, the majority of the interns had experience in other careers before deciding to become teachers.

There are 41 interns in the Class of 2011 with endorsements in elementary, middle and secondary education as well as language and art education.

This year's class includes a former Olympian, a freelance writer, a software engineer, an ESL teacher, a Christmas tree farm owner/operator, a wilderness guide, and an architectural designer.  Many interns already have experience working in schools as substitute teachers and paraprofessionals.

They range in age from 22 to 55---the average age is 38, the mean age is 31.  Eight interns hold advanced degrees---seven Master's and one JD.  About one-third of the class will begin a Master's program while interning at UVEI this year.

Graduates

More than 750 men and women have graduated from the program, serving in schools in Vermont and New Hampshire. Others are teaching in different parts of the country and abroad.

Sixty-five percent of those who graduated in the last five years are teaching full-time.  An additional 18 percent are working in schools, both full- and part-time, as education specialists, assistant teachers, and permanent substitutes, while some graduates work in school libraries or in guidance.
